One of the most well-known predators on the planet has one of the highest kill rates in the entire animal kingdom. The Hyaenidae family, which includes hyenas, is a fascinating group of carnivorous mammals primarily found in Africa and parts of Asia. These animals exhibit complex social structures that have been the subject of extensive scientific study. Hyena clans are arranged within a linear dominance

hierarchy, with the highest-ranking queen at the top, followed by her offspring and other females and their young. This social structure is maintained through maternal inheritance, which has been found to result in a decline in social rank and life quality for all members, except the queen. Lower-ranking hyenas experience challenges such as reduced access to food, increased harassment, and less time for nursing their young. Despite these difficulties, hyenas exhibit remarkable adaptability and resilience.


  • The term “hyena” is not a specific animal but merely a general term, as there are actually four different species within the Hyaenidae family:

The Spotted Hyena, the most social & largest of its kind, is commonly known for its infamous distinctive "laughing" vocalizations, they operate in complex social structures while simultaneously demonstrate prowess as both skilled hunters & scavengers.

Brown Hyenas, comparatively more solitary & less extensively studied than their spotted relatives, possess a distinct appearance characterized by a shaggy coat. They are primarily scavengers, relying significantly on carrion in their diet.

Striped Hyenas, identified by their unique striped coat, exhibit primarily nocturnal behavior. Known for their secretive & solitary scavenging habits, they also engage in hunting small prey on occasion.


Aardwolf

Aardwolf (Proteles cristata):


The Aardwolf, the smallest & most specialized among of the hyenas, and has evolved to depend on their diet, predominantly composed of termites. They are nocturnal creatures adept at avoiding direct competition with larger predators.

Particularly the spotted hyenas are known for their impressive hunting success rates. Studies have shown that spotted hyenas have a high hunting success rate compared to many other carnivores. Their hunting success rate has an average range of 30-40%, however it has been reported around 70% or even higher, placing them amongst the higher kill rates amongst carnivorous mammals. The hunting success of spotted hyenas can be attributed to their exceptional stamina, adaptability, and opportunistic hunting behavior, which allows them to effectively select and pursue prey. Often hunt in groups, known as “packs”, they are easily capable of taking down prey much larger than themselves through coordinated efforts. However, single hyenas also will go out hunting, select a victim and start a chase. Sometimes, other hyenas join them to bring prey down together. They have also been observed hunting alone when killing small prey. Research has shown that spotted hyenas, in particular, have a matriarchal system, with females in charge and males leaving to seek out new packs. The social status of a hyena's mother significantly influences the length and quality of its life, with higher-status mothers leading to stronger social associations and better survival prospects for their offspring. The study of hyena societies has provided insights into the inheritance of social status and the complex cultural dynamics within these animal groups.

They often prefer to hunt in open plains to areas with denser vegetation because it affords them higher visibility and more room to maneuver as a group or run down prey using their exceptional endurance and stamina.
